Enriching the lives of children with special needs through Music Therapy.
``Without music, life would be an error.`` Fredrich Nietzsche
Everyone Deserves Music is a national, Australian charity advancing education and social welfare for children with special needs, through Music Therapy. Our main objective is to raise funds to provide:
- grants to Registered Music Therapists to establish and/or maintain group or individual Music Therapy programs, or
- a free or subsidised Music Therapy service to approved schools and early intervention programs through the contracting of Registered Music Therapists.
In Australia, Music Therapy is a very small profession with the potential to make a significant difference to the lives of those it touches. We identified a need for our incorporated association when we learned that many schools would love to have a Registered Music Therapist (RMT) on their staff, however there was a distinct lack of resources to secure funding. While Education Queensland supports the employment or contracting of RMTs, it is up to individual schools to engage in grant-writing and fundraising activities to make this happen and, with limited resources, this can create a barrier. This is where we come in!
We believe we are unique to larger NFPs operating here in South East Queensland, we pride ourselves on being able to show our supporters exactly where their money is being spent. We are a smaller NFP and have the advantage of being able to spend the large majority of our donations directly on Music Therapy for our community’s children with special needs.
What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is a registered allied health profession with Allied Health Professionals Australia. To practise Music Therapy you must be a Registered Music Therapist (RMT), registered with the Australian Music Therapy Association Inc. (AMTA). This ensures that approved tertiary training has been undertaken, skills are maintained and updated and it ensures a standard of ethical practice.
Everyone Deserves Music Inc. is an associate member of the Australian Music Therapy Association.
“RMTs are skilled musicians who are trained to understand how music participation impacts behaviour, cognitive processes and emotions. They work collaboratively with people to decide on goals to be addressed in music therapy, facilitate music experiences in which people can participate successfully, and evaluate the benefits of music therapy to people’s health. Music therapists incorporate a range of music making methods within and through a therapeutic relationship.”
– Dr. Grace Thompson, AMTA president.
RMTs work in many settings and with many populations. Everyone Deserves Music Inc.’s main objective is to increase the contracting of RMTs in the educational setting. In schools and early intervention centres, the role of the RMT is to facilitate the achievement of educational goals for children with a diagnosed or suspected disability, through music. These goals vary as a child develops but often include areas such as social skills, communication, cognitive skills, literacy, numeracy, motor skills, emotional regulation and awareness, school readiness skills and behaviour management.
